Desire and Aspiration in the Spiritual Life

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Often we think that the fulfilment of desires will bring us happiness. It is easy to have the thought that, if we can earn a certain amount of money, then we will have the security and ability to enable us to practise spirituality more. However, often when we fulfill a certain desire, it actually only increases our desire for more material possessions. The nature of desire is that when a desire is fulfilled the more desires we generate.

There is a big difference between desire and aspiration. Desire is our wish for material, finite things. Desire usually involves possession of things or other people. We desire objects because we feel that they will give us pleasure and satisfaction. Aspiration is a very different kind of desire. Spiritual aspiration is a wish to grow into a more divine consciousness.

“Desire is a wildfire that burns and burns and finally consumes us. Aspiration is a glowing fire that secretly and sacredly uplifts our consciousness and finally liberates us.” (1)

When we aspire we do not want anything on an outer plane. We are seeking to find inner peace and inner happiness. It is the inner joy that does not depend on outer circumstances. In aspiration there is no desire for possession. The nature of spiritual consciousness is oneness. What we have is not just for ourselves, we feel part of a larger self. It is through aspiration that we are able to go beyond the ego and attain true satisfaction.

“He who desires wants to possess each and every thing, each and every individual in the entire world. He who aspires wants only those things that will help him transcend his abundant limitations and teeming imperfections.” (2)

To make real progress in the spiritual life we have to limit our desires. We have to give first priority to spirituality rather than the fulfilment of material desires. It is a mistake to think that we will make more spiritual progress in the future if we can change our outer circumstances. Spirituality always needs to be practised in the here and now. Whatever our outer circumstances we need to make the best use of them. If we wait for a golden tomorrow, that future may never come.

To limit our desires does not mean we have to live the life of an ascetic. Money does not have to be an obstacle in the spiritual life. If money is used for divine purposes then it can help and expedite our spiritual journey. From a spiritual point of view money is only a problem when it becomes our primary objective. When making money takes precedent in everything we do, then we do not find time to pray and meditate. However it is possible to combine great material wealth with a sincere spirituality, like for example King Janaka.

I make time to giggle.

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Life is too short to miss out on the fun, so every day I am sure to enjoy some humor. Laughter is one of nature’s best stress relievers and so I take advantage of its benefits whenever I can.

I allow myself to be easily amused and take pleasure in the simple things of life. When I see a puppy wagging its tail, it reminds me of how totally exuberant puppies are, and l take time to laugh and enjoy its further antics.

A funny movie quote can liven up even the dullest of conversations! It also steers the discussion toward things I love.

“Remember when…” can bring back funny memories over and over again. Whenever I am with my family or an old friend, we enjoy the same funny stories for years. They are part of a common heritage of fun that we share and cherish.

Every time someone new joins the group, I laugh again as they get to hear the stories for the first time.

I also make time to watch funny movies and play funny games with my friends and family. Nothing beats the good feelings from an evening of laughter!

When tension is great, sometimes I even say or do something silly. It brings an immediate release of the tension so we can all then focus more clearly on the matter at hand.

Today, I choose to see the humor in my everyday situations and make time to do something just for the fun of it!

Self-Reflection Questions:

1. Am I too serious to enjoy laughter each and every day?
2. When was the last time I did something funny and outrageous?
3. How can I add more humor into my life?

Spirituality Information – Who Are You?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Spirituality information is centered on the themes of love, spirituality, unity and the eternal question of “Who Are You?

Poets and sages, philosophers and scientists, commoners and kings have all asked the same question since the dawn of time. “Who Am I?”

Spirituality information asks, “Do you know who you really are?”

We live in a relative universe where we are able to tell what something is by comparing it to something that it is not. A car is not a chair. A mouse is not an elephant. A human is not a telephone. And, of course, you are not me. At least not on the physical plane of the relative.

This concept of relativity allows us to define and label most of the known universe but never really comes close to describing “who you really are.” the reason for this is very simple. You are much more than a physical body.

Describing your human body is easy. If you were just your human body you could be known as the person with the long blonde hair, or the person with the bald head. These are physical traits and they are part of your physical make-up but most people would agree that they are merely descriptions of your body but they don’t answer the question of “Who are you?”

These physical descriptions don’t take into account the non-physical part of you like your personality or your memories or your aspirations. These are the non-physical aspects of you that go much deeper into understanding the real you but they don’t complete the equation either.

You are not your body.

There is more to you than your physical body that travels this earth and experiences all of the wonderful things that come into your life through your thoughts, words and deeds.

There is more to you than your non-physical self that makes up your personality and allows you to think the thoughts you think, have your memory of past experiences and allows your imagination to work towards your own particular desires.

The equation is complete when you add in the spirit part of your beingness. This is the meta-physical part of you that is your connection to “Source Energy”. It is the warehouse of the totality of you. It is the you before this physical form of you existed and it is the you after this physical form is no more. It is the eternal and infinite nature in you that connects you to the eternal and infinite process of life.

Body, Mind and Spirit

Who you really are is a three-part being made up of your physical body, your non-physical mind and your meta-physical spirit. You are a body, mind, spirit being and in the ultimate reality of you, you are infinite and eternal.
Isn’t that liberating? To know that you are infinite and eternal? To know that you never really die? You merely change form to go on to your next creation. Use this awareness of your true nature to make this present life situation one of Joy, Peace and Love.

This is your true nature. Who you really are is love. And not just love, but Unconditional Love. Your source is “Unconditional Love”. You are one with your source and you are “Unconditional Love’. You are here in this physical universe with one mission, to experience Unconditional Love in all of its different perspectives.

Every experience in your life fulfills that agenda. When you understand this concept completely you will begin to know, in this current reality, “Who You Really Are.”

Spiritual Growth From Bereavement

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Creating or strengthening our spirituality can have untold beneficial effects upon us after loss. By spirituality I do not mean religion. The two are very separate. Religion is based around organised belief by an outside body. Spirituality in contrast, is individual belief created by …
